English section / Greatest players Nils Liedholm Nils Liedholm was the thinking head in the famous Swedish trio who built Milan's legend after war. He won two championships with Norrkoping and and 18 Sweden caps before making the move to Milan after the 1948 Olympics together with Gunnar Gren and Gunnar Nordahl (still the top scorer in Italian League history: 225 goals in 257 matches) and he remains one of the most beloved characters in Milan's history. When the elegant midfield general won the first of his four Scudettos in 1950-51, Milan set a record for points (60) which still stands today and they managed to win ten games in a row (also a Serie A record). More Serie A titles followed in 1954-55 and 1956-57. Milan were a juggernaut, also finding time to win the Latin Cup in 1951 and 1956. Two years after he joined, during a game at the San Siro, the Swede misplaced a pass. Not so strange, you'd think… except it was the first time he'd done so in Milan colours. He remembers the reaction: "My mistake was so unexpected that they gave me an ovation that lasted for five minutes." Liedholm returned to the San Siro as a coach, guiding Milan to their famous tenth title in 1979. He now runs a successful vineyard.
Gunnar Nordahl Gunnar was the best and the most famous of the five Nordahl brothers who all played in the top flight in Sweden. Nordahl's game was all about scoring, and goals just dripped off him. Born in Hornefors in 1921, he joined his local side Degerfors and banged in 77 goals in just 58 games. That kind of record soon attracted the attention of bigger clubs, and he moved to IFK Norrkoping where his 93 goals in 92 games brought four straight Swedish titles. He worked as a fireman throughout his time in Sweden, but, after impressing at the London Olympics of 1948, he gave that up to move to AC Milan. There he was part of the Grenoli triumvirate who kickstarted Milan's history. He scored an astonishing 225 goals in 257 Serie A games, five times finishing as the league's top scorer. Gunnar Nordahl died 1995 which caused big grief in both Italy and Sweden. In honour of Gunnar Nordahl IFK raised a statue that now stands outside the IFK clubhouse.
Björn Nordqvist One of the all-time greats of Swedish football, Nordqvist for a time had played more internationals than anybody else, clocking up an incredible 115 caps in the 70s and early 80s. He played in the World Cups of 1970, 1974 and 1978, although he only turned professional in 1974. He made his international debut against Finland in 1963, and, incredibly wasn't recalled to the side until September the following year, when he played against Norway. A commanding centre-back, he twice inspired IFK Norrkoping to the league title, and also helped them to a Cup triumph. Having turned pro, he moved to Dutch club PSV Eindhoven, where he won the Dutch title in his first season. After leaving PSV, Nordqvist had a brief spell with IFK Gothenburg, before moving to the NASL with Minnesota Kicks. He ended his career back in Sweden with Orgryte. Ove Kindvall The local son born 1943 in Norrkoping who became one of the biggest players of all time in swedish fotball history. He joined IFK Norrkopings youth team when he was 11 years old. He made his debut away against Degerfors IF in 1962 where they lost 4-0. Despite the loss against Degerfors IF, Ove and IFK managed to win the championship the same year. Because of the fact that Ove only played six games that season he didn´t get any medal instead he had to wait until the following season when IFK defended their title. In 1965 Ove made his debut in the Swedish nationalteam and it turned out to be a successful start to his international career. 1966 he moved from IFK Norrkoping to Feyenoord and he remained in the club for four and a half seasons. He managed to score 127goals, win two league titles and win both the European cup and the World cup for clubs. His most famous goal was the decider in stockagetime against Celtic in the European cup final. After four and a half seasons in Feyenoord he returned to Norrkoping 1971. He stayed in IFK Norrkoping until 1975. He moved to Gothenburg to work as head of production for JOFA´s productions of sportswear and footballs. Instead of ending his football career as planned he joined IFK Gothenburg and he helped them to promote the club to the swedish div 1 (Allsvenskan). After the promotion he stayed for one more season before ending his great football career. Tomas Brolin The 29th of november 1969 was the day when Elsy and Rune Brolin gave birth to one of the greatest players in Swedish fotball history, Tomas Brolin. Tomas played his first game with Nasviken when he was only six years old. When he was 15 years old he made his debut in Nasvikens senior team in the Swedish div IV. In 1986 he joined GIF Sundsvall and made his debut in the highest league (allsvenskan) in Sweden. His big breakthrough had to wait until 1990 when he moved to IFK Norrkoping who were the Swedish champions at the time. In his debut he made three goals against IFK Gothenburg. IFK finally won the game with 6-0 in the opening match of the season. In only nine games he managed to make seven goals that led to him getting selected to the Swedish world cup team by Olle Nordin. Although Sweden played a miserable tournament Brolin managed to make two goals. Italian team Parma noticed Brolins talents and bought him from Norrkoping for the biggest transfer sum ever to be seen in Swedish football. Brolin became a world player in Parma and he was a big reason for Sweden's success in the European championship 1992 and the World cup 1994 where Sweden managed to get a third place. In 1994 he was at the peak of his career and he was selected to the world team but unfortunately a tragic injury occurred in an international game against Poland in Rasunda. He made a fast recovery from his injury (broken foot) but never managed to reach the same form as he had before the injury. After a disappointing spell in Leeds, Parma and Zürich he ended his career in Crystal Palace. On the 12th of august 1998 he informed the public that his career was formally over. He was only 29 years old when the football career ended. |
